Shea illustrates highly detailed and surrealistic images that feature unsettling and often violent subject matter creating a visually intricate detailed cacophony of social interaction, working to evoke strong emotions within the viewer thus forcing them to draw their own moral conclusions.
His works are narrative in nature and feature a central character in a portrait/character study, exploring themes of development, both physical and emotional, through the experience of social and age related rites of passage eg. birth, loss of innocence, coming of age, etc.
Working with stripped down simple materials; a single half millimetre mechanical pencil, some paper and an eraser, he obsessively renders edge to edge, systematically utilising 100% of the paper's drawing surface. Shea seeks to explore the tonal and textural possibilities of his instrument of choice.
